Property insurance can protect a building, its contents or business assets, but these are different categories. Start by identifying what you own and the risks you need covered.

Building and contents cover

Building cover generally concerns the structure and permanent fixtures. Contents cover concerns movable belongings. Tenants and property owners therefore have different needs.

Business property

A business may need cover for stock, equipment, fire, theft and interruption to trading. Ask how values must be declared and updated.

Avoid underinsurance

Use realistic rebuilding or replacement values. Compare covered events, exclusions, excesses, security conditions, interruption benefits and claim deadlines.
